Life is a series of events that affect our fascial network — the interwoven biological fabric that influences all of our body structures and functions. Some events are small, repetitive and insidious, while others are large and obvious traumas, surgeries or injuries.

The older we get, the more these events can pull, twist, imbalance and shorten our fascia. Combined with the daily weight of gravity on our bodies, these compounding events can cause tensional disturbances that accumulate over time. These disturbances can cause our fascia to lose its elasticity and become compressed, grisly, and dehydrated, as well as leading to the formation of scar tissue. Over time, these changes can quite literally drag us down, and contribute to creating symptoms of chronic pain and dysfunction.

What is Normal?

Gracefully accepting the changes that occur as we age is a healthy part of getting older. However, there are aspects of “aging” that we do not have to simply “accept.”

Craniosacral Therapy, combined with proactive lifestyle changes related to diet and exercise and complemented by other healthcare modalities, is a very effective way to halt, change or prevent many aspects of the “aging” process that we have come to accept as “normal” or that we “learn to live with.”

To borrow the words of Dr. Christiane Northrup, “I firmly believe that while growing older is inevitable, aging is optional”!

2) Losing flexibility and mobility and experiencing stiffness, inflammation and pain

3) Experiencing the loss or diminishment of basic functioning in the areas of sight, hearing, digestion, elimination, metabolism and circulation.

The Brain and the River

“My idea worth sharing is that Alzheimer’s is preventable and even reversible.” – Michael Morgan CST-D

The following analogy is given to us by Michael Morgan CST-D in his TEDX Talk.

In thinking of the brain, let us think of a river. Imagine that the water level sinks to such an extent that the river moves more slowly, and starts to dry up. As this happens, increased mud, sludge and silt begin to prevent the water that remains from flowing freely. In Alzheimer’s patients, the brain appears to shrink and dry up, meaning the cerebrospinal fluid’s flow and amount are reduced—just like a riverbed without much water. Amyloid plaque and neurofibrillary tangles, which are proteins that are toxic to the brain, are seen to be more prevalent in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s. If we think of cerebrospinal fluid—which bathes the healthy brain, provides it with vital neurotransmitters, and washes away waste products and toxins—as the river, then the amyloid plaque and neurofibrillary tangles are like the mud and sludge that prevent that river from flowing.  

Why does this happen?  One theory is that this “drying up” process can be attributed to brain inflammation, which over a period of years can contribute to the formation of plaques and tangles, brain shrinkage, less cerebrospinal fluid and therefore less functionality.

How Can Craniosacral Therapy Help?

Working with and reducing brain and spinal cord membrane tensions can strengthen the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and fluid exchange, thus helping reduce inflammation, which in turn can optimize the brain’s ability to cleanse itself of these harmful plaques and tangles. Reducing these tensional disturbances can therefore allow the brain to heal and or stay healthy—just like a river flowing freely.
